PAPER FERRIS WHEEL / GIANT WHEEL
This is how to make a paper Giant Wheel out of folded
Origami pieces:
Sticks, spokes, axle and capsules. The wheel is made out of paper
only,
no (metal, hard paper) reinforcements. I made a large wheel out of
a4 papers and a smaller wheel with pink capsules out of a5 size
papers.

Step 1:
I
used a4-size papers for the giant wheel with blue capsules and
a5-size papers (=half the size of an a4-paper) for the giant wheel
with pink capsules.

Step 6:
The
giant wheel is made out of two wheels which are exactly the same.
You need 8 long sticks for each wheel.
Make a paper geo ruler by folding an a4 or a5 paper over this purple
line.
Step 5:
Make
16 of these long sticks.
Step 2:
The
long sticks are folded out of a4 or a5 papers.
Fold in half.
Step 4:
Fold
over these two lines.

Step 3:
Fold
in half two times.

Step 10:
Prefold
and cut an a4 or a5 paper in half: Then repeat the folds of steps 2
to 4 on these papers.
Make 16 of these short sticks, eight for each wheel.

Step 8:
And
the circle with eight sticks / sides is done...
Glue three a4 or a5 papers together and cut this long rectangle into
the right length, the diameter of the circle. Then fold it into a
long spoke by repeating steps 2 to 4 on this long rectangle.
Make eight spokes in total.
Step 9:
Four
spokes are glued to each wheel.
Step 7:
Use
the two edges on the right of the paper geo ruler to make a large
circle out of eight sticks.

Step 16:
Make
24 of these small round sticks.
Step 15:
Now
it's easier to roll up the paper, use glue or tape.
Step 12:
Here
eight sticks are glued to the wheel, do the same on the other wheel.
Step 11:
Glue
eight short sticks to the wheel, in a circle.
Step 14:
Make
a few folds on the edge first.

Step 13:
Prefold
and cut an a4 or a5 paper in four parts of the same size. These
small rectangles are used to make the round sticks which connect
both wheels.

Step 21:
Done.....
Step 19:
Cut
the center of the four spokes on one wheel. Then fold about 1 cm of
the tips downwards.
Step 20:
Repeat
step 19 on the other wheel.
Step 18:
The
sticks are glued on the 16 corners of the large and small circle and
on the 8 spots in the middle of the corners on the large outer
circle.
Remove the flat box / stack of magazines and glue the rest of the
round sticks between both wheels.
Step 17:
Use a
flat box or small stack of magazines to hold both wheels on the
right place.
Start glueing the round sticks between both wheels, see arrows as
example.

Step 22:
The
axle tube is made by rolling up eight a4 or a5 papers into a tube.
Step 28:
Make
two of these stands for the giant wheel.
Step 25:
Insert
the axle into the tube.
Step 26:
Glue
/ tape four a4 or a5 papers in four layers together, so 16 papers in
total.
Fold this long rectangle in half three times.
Step 24:
The
axle is made by rolling up four a4 or a5 papers tightly.
Step 23:
Slide
the axle tube through the wheels, use glue

Step 29:
Glue
the stands to a strong base, I used a cardboard base myself.
Step 27:
Fold
the strip into a large triangle like shape

Step 30:
Glue
both ends of the axle to the tip of each stand, see arrow as
example.
The base of the giant wheel is ready now...
Step 31:
Take
a colored a4 or a5 paper for the capsule. Prefold in half, then fold
the edge to the prefolded centerline, see purple arrow.
Step 32:
Prefold
and cut along this line.

Step 33:
The
paper size is 2 squares now.
Prefold in half, then (pre)fold both halfs in three parts of the
same size.
Fold over the two outer lines afterwards.
Step 35:
Prefold
both halfs in three parts of the same size.

Step 34:
Prefold
over the two long purple lines, just a little off the edge.
And prefold the model in half over the short line.

Step 36:
Prefold
over these lines, use the prefolded lines as guidance.
Step 37:
Fold
into a straight angle, use the prefolded lines as help.

Step 38:
Fold
both edges in half.
Step 39:
Fold
into a straight angle, use the prefolded lines as guidance.
Step 40:
Fold
into straight angles over these two prefolded lines.
Step 41:
Repeat
steps 37 to 40 on the left, mirrorwise.

Step 42:
Make 16 of these capsules and glue them around the 16
round sticks on the outer circle of the giant wheel.
