FOLDING A GRASSHOPPER
Only the front of the square piece of paper is coloured.
Step 1:
This is the front of the paper.
Make mountain- and valley-folds over
these 4 lines.
Unfold each fold after you made one.
Step 2:
Make a valley-fold over these 4 lines.
Step 3:
Turn the model.
Step 4:
Make these folds from the edge of the
model
to the center, not any further.
First, make 2 valley-folds below, on the
right. Then, make
2 mountain-folds in the middle. And make
2 valley-folds
on top, on the left.
Now you get a basic-shape.
Step 5:
Turn the model, with the open side above
in the picture.
Step 6:
Pull the piece on the right of the blue
line upwards,
by making a valley-fold over this blue
line.
Step 7:
Hold the piece between two fingers (see
the smaller arrows)
and make this piece flat by pushing on
it from above with
your other hand.
Step 8:
Make a valley-fold over these 2 lines.
Step 9:
Unfold the folds that you made in step 8.
Step 10:
Pull the edge at the arrow downwards by
making
a valley-fold over the blue line.
Step 11:
Press the edges that stand upwards down
(see arrows)
so everything becomes flat.
Step 12:
Fold the triangular end (in the middle)
upwards by making
a valley-fold over the blue line.
Step 13:
Repeat step 7 to 12 for the
other 3 pieces of the model.
Step 14:
Open the model by pulling the
2 ends (in the front)
in the direction of the 2 arrows.
Step 15:
Fold the triangular piece (see
arrow) to the inside of
the model by making a mountain-fold over
the blue line.
Step 16:
Push the 2 ends indicated by
the arrows towards each other,
so the model is closed again.
Now the model has the same shape as the
figure of step 14,
except for the little triangular end
that is folded to the
inside of the model.
Step 17:
Repeat step 14 to 16 for the other 3
little triangular ends.
Step 18:
Push the 2 pieces on the left and right
of the blue line
towards each other by making a
valley-fold over this
blue line.
Then, turn the model, with the open side
below.
Step 19:
Pull the upper paper-layer of the edges
upwards.
Make a valley-fold over the blue line
while you do this.
Step 20:
Here a part of the folds in step 19 is
already done.
Now press on the pieces below the blue
line, so everything
becomes flat.
Step 21:
Pull the end (at the bottom of the
arrow) upwards by making
a valley-fold over the blue line.
Step 22:
Press on the edges that stand upwards
(see arrows) to
make the model flat again.
Step 23:
Fold the end above the blue line
downwards, by making
a valley-fold over this blue line.
Repeat step 19 to 23 on the other 3 same
pieces of the model.
Step 24:
Now the eyes must be on top of the model.
In this case, I only needed to make a
valley-fold
over the blue line. Maybe you need to
make more
of these folds to get the eyes on top.
Step 25:
Turn the model upside down.
Step 26:
Fold the end below the blue line upwards
by making
a valley-fold over this blue line.
Step 27:
Fold the 2 ends below upwards by making
a valley-fold
over the 2 blue lines.
Step 28:
Fold the second 2 ends below upwards too
by making
a valley-fold over these 2 lines.
Step 29:
And fold the last 2 ends upwards by
making a valley-fold
over these 2 lines.
Step 30:
Make a mountain-fold over the short blue
lines on the
4 upper-ends.
When you place the grasshopper on his
feet later,
these 4 little pieces have to lay flat
on the surface.
Step 31:
Turn the model.
Step 32:
Make a mountain-fold over the blue line
on the left.
The origami grasshopper is ready!
